Bula and welcome to the Fiji Island Tours newsletter for this month. We hope that you enjoy your little taste of Fiji every month – something particularly necessary now that the weather is getting a little colder here in Australia.
I have just finished reading Matthew Brace's book Hotel Heaven. Matthew is a renowned travel writer whose work has appeared around the globe praising, or not, those hotels calling themselves Luxury. Hotel owners and managers lavish upon him the best of the best in the hope of a great review. But Matthew won't be swayed by the bells and whistles. Something Matthew ponders in his book is what really defines luxury? Is it the glamour of a fleet of Rolls Royce lined up outside for guests' convenience? Or is it gazing at a starlit sky in the desert from the comfort of your five star tent? Or is it about service and the level and quality of that service? It is many things, and different things to different people. I believe we have recently re-discovered a place that to me defines luxury. True service, true understated elegance, true style. An uncrowded place of rich simplicity and relaxation, a place that is blessed with one continuous white sandy beach that surrounds the entire island where your spacious villa rests beneath the palms and frangipani trees. A place where cuisine is an integral part of your whole experience.
Vomo Island Resort. There is no other. How true this is and how wonderful a re-discovery.
My recent experience of luxury at Vomo Island Resort was with my own family – my husband and two children. A short break to spend some time together and relax. Vomo is one of the few resorts that welcomes families year round and what a delight. Vomo is not about crowded kids clubs (although in school holidays the Chiefly Bure is turned into the Vomo Turtle Club) it's about spending quality time at a quality place together.
Vomo is about understated elegance – from the beautifully appointed villas - hilltop, beachfront, and the magnificent Royal Villa complex which features 3 individual bedrooms, expansive outdoor decks, large private swimming pool and private beach cabana to the fully refurbished Beyond Reef Restaurant and Vuda Bar; to the magnificent pool with new chaise lounges and beautiful outlook. Wander down to the Mamanuca beach and discover the beautiful beachfront deck that elevates you to make the most of the magnificent views across to the popular Mamanuca Islands . We had that beach to ourselves every day of our stay.
Integral to the Vomo experience is the food. Recently Vomo welcomed their new Executive Chef Shane Avant who has arrived with an extensive list of awards, among them the vote of Second Best Chef in the World at the Best Young Chef at the Confrerie De La Chaine des Rotisseures in Paris . He has cooked for celebrity and royalty and worked in notable resorts such as Peppers Spice Peak Lodge and the Wilderness Lodge at Lake Moeraki .
The food at Vomo is the best I have tasted. Shane creates a menu at each meal that is superb in its use of local ingredients and imported specialities. Seafood night was a night to behold – the freshest, most beautiful seafood, presented magnificently and enjoyed to the very last morsel. Lunches are perfectly light and breakfasts spot on. Sometimes three meals a day at resorts can be simply too much – Shane masterfully presents menus that compliment each other throughout the day so you are always ready for that next delight. I would return to Vomo for the food alone.
Vomo Island Resort is blessed with some of the most beautiful staff you will meet in Fiji (and that's a big call I know). When you are there make sure you wander down to the activities Bure and meet the wonderful Wise. Wise is in charge and is chief carer of the Vomo Turtle Breeding programme. Hawksbill Turtles in Fiji are under threat for a number of reasons - they have a survival rate of just 3%. The Vomo turtle programme hopes to increase this to 10% by breeding them in captivity and releasing them only when their shells are hard enough to survive attack from their natural predators. Wise is a truly wonderful man who's focus on the turtles is truly wonderful – not to mention he plays a great eukalale with Aquila and the boys at night!
